LIKE KRYPTON
I was standing by the ocean, looking out on the bay,
I was thinking just how beautiful God made it all this way,
I was watching for a whitecap coming ‘cross the sound,
There was sunlight on the water, gleaming all around.
And then a man hastens to tell me
That it ain’t like that no more,
‘Cause the oil slick’s floating everywhere,
Even on that ocean floor.

I was standing on a hilltop, staring up at the sky,
I was knee-deep in that meadow, Lord, watching clouds roll by,
I was lost in contemplation, how the Earth it is so fair,
I was sighing deep and breathing hard, pure and fragrant air.
And then a man hastens to tell me
I shouldn’t breathe that hard no more,
‘Cause the air is filled with dirt and gas,
And the sunlight’s making more.

If we don’t want to end like Krypton,
I think, my friend, it’s time for me and you,
‘Cause if we don’t start doing something,
You know, there won’t be nothing left to do,
I say there won’t be nothing left to do.

I was standing on a mountain, out in a gentle rain,
I was thinking how the heavens, Lord, make it clean again,
I was tasting falling raindrops, out on the tip of my tongue,
And then the sun came out, and did a rainbow, too, after the shower was done.
And then a man hastens to tell me,
I shouldn’t drink that water down,
‘Cause the lakes are collecting chemicals,
From some far-off distant town.

I was standing in the city, looking at all those lights,
Oh, the power grid was gleaming, Lord, everything shining bright,
I felt so secure down deep inside, a comfort just like home,
Ain’t it good to know with science here, ain’t nothing going wrong.
And then a man hastens to tell me,
I can’t go to the city no more,
‘Cause the containment fields have broken,
And there’s double trouble at the core.

If we don’t want to end like Krypton,
I think, my friend, it’s time for me and you,
‘Cause if we don’t start doing something,
You know, there won’t be nothing left to do,
I say there won’t be nothing left to do.

Said, if we don’t want to end like Krypton,
I think, my friend, it’s time for me and you,
‘Cause if we don’t start doing something,
You know, there won’t be nothing left to do,
I say there won’t be nothing left to do,
Oh, Lord, there won’t be nothing left to do.
